Diving

Alor offers many dive sites, these can be divided into two main areas, Pantar Strait and Kalabahi Bay. Alor has rugged mountains that plunge into the 1000m deep Pantar Strait. Crystal clear waters, deep seas and frequent current combined with Alor's location within the marine diversity hot spot of the coral triangle means that the reefs and corals are some of the healthiest and diverse in Indonesia. There are sites for all levels of diver some sheltered and some with strong current. We carefully consider your preferences and experience level when selecting dive sites.

Reef Diving

The stretch of water between Alor and Pantar island is deep, clear and produces spectacular reefs. The north is usually warmer with many large vibrant corals covering slopes and walls surrounded by schooling reef fish and pelagics. To the south it is often cooler, reefs and marine life differ from the north and some unusual species can be seen. There are walls, slopes, swim throughs, caves and anemone filled areas unique to Alor.

Some favourite sites include:

Yellow Corner - Alor's best dive site for seeing schooling fish including snappers, chub, trevelly , batfish, Eaglerays, blacktip reef sharks and if you're lucky schooling hammerhead sharks.

Bama Wall - Majestic topography on this spectacular vertical wall covered in small and medium fish. See sergeant majors protecting their eggs from the hungry butterfly fish, and keep an eye out in the blue for passing pelagics.

Caves - Two very different caves on one dive. Lots of lobsters, crabs, snakes and sometimes nurse and bamboo sharks. Seasonally wobbegong sharks

Karls Dream - Shallow pinnacles plunging into deep water. Experienced divers can meet huge tuna, napoleonfish, barracuda and clouds of schooling fish, with pelagics passing in the blue.

Anemone Valley - This unique site has the worlds highest concentration of anemones, rare sea apples, beautiful corals and for lucky divers thresher sharks.

Macro/ Muck Diving

This large bay about 15 KM long by 1 KM wide has deep water, mild currents and an amazing amount of marine life with incredible macro and muck diving found on the diverse dive sites. There are walls, slopes and a jetty with hard and soft coral, as well as black sand and muck sites. Feather Stars and Fire Urchins crowd some areas in unbelievable numbers and with a keen eye you might spot the rhinopias, frogfish, mandarinfish, many species of pipefish, seahorse, coleman shrimp, wonderpus, blue ring octopus, nudibranchs, zebra crabs, bobbit worms and harliquin shrimps.

Muck Mosque - This macro site is one of the more well known in Alor and for good reason, day or night there are always critters to find. Depending on luck and conditions you could see rhinopias, leaf scorpion fish, frogfish, cockatoo waspfish, various octopus and many different nudibranch.

Mini Wall - A small wall packed with life. We often see mandarinfish, mushroom coral pipefish, electric clams, various shrimps and nudibranchs, along with juvenile fish.
