Alor's Dive Sites
The rugged slopes that dominate Alor's landscape are just as influential below the waves. Plunging walls and rocky crevices interspersed with sandy slopes and boulder fields provide a perfect mix of environments for a spectacular array of wildlife.
Dense schools of fish surge over some of the healthiest and most diverse reefs in Indonesia, whilst blacktips, trevally and tuna patrol for a bite to eat. Cryptic muck-dwellers hide in plain sight and in the blue there is the possibility of chance encounters with pelagics such as eagle rays, hammerheads, mola and thresher sharks.
The deep channels that contribute to the notoriously strong currents swirling around the archipelago also form an important migratory corridor, so for the very lucky few there may even be a chance to see a blue whale.

The Alor Islands Marine Park has an abundance of dive sites (over 70 at the last count) and Lazy Turtle Dive is located in the heart of the action.
Three geographic areas
Alor-Pantar Strait North
sites north of Pura
Northern sites are more likely to:

be warmer (26-28°C)
-
be sandier (white, red or black sand)

have large hard corals and huge barrel sponges

more delicate soft corals
North (at Munaseli) is where you might see hammerheads.
Alor-Pantar Strait South
sites south of Pura
Southern sites are more likely to:

be cooler (24-26°C)
-
be rockier (some caves and swim throughs)
-
have some different coral and sponge species than in the north, and more algae
At some of the southern sites there is a chance of threshers or wobbegong sharks. Apuri Bay has sea apples. Gua Wolang (Wolang Caves) has flashlight fish and shark eggs.

Kalabahi Bay is home to the cryptic and unusual, and it's where we usually head for night dives.
